What do you think in bed when you try to sleep?

Previously in IPL, on-field umpire used to give Soft signal then the third umpire search for conclusive evidence. If conclusive evidence is not arrived, third umpire would go with Soft Signal. It was removed from IPL in 2021. Let’s see why that is a good decision based on an experiment.
University College London conducted a study in which the participants were asked to determine whether the tennis ball pitched was in or out. They were also given the default decision like “in” or “out”. If the default decision doesn’t match with the decision they have made, participants have to press a button to change the default decision. The difficult the process of deciding, the more they go with default decision. Likewise, I believe in IPL too, when the process of deciding is too difficult, third umpire would opt for the default decision which is Soft Signal.
When we have so much to process, we go with default option but from the perspective of brain, it goes to default state when it has nothing to do. Below is the FMRI scan of brain of a person who is eating 5star doing nothing.
These are the regions responsible for thinking about past and future but not present. The reason why the brain goes to default mode when not doing a task is because it is more energy efficient. So, next time you are lying in bed thinking about past or future, be proud that your brain is saving energy. Note: According to a study you are not in the present for 46.9% of your waking time. Solution that nobody asked for: When expert meditators brains were scanned when doing nothing, the default network of the brain is not so activated. So, wake up tomorrow when the alarm wakes you, switch off the alarm and close your eyes to meditate for 5 minutes.
