What do you think in bed when you try to sleep?

This blog is the extension of https://reasonsbehindfrombala.blogspot.com/2020/09/why-you-should-not-use-chrome-in-your.html . Try to read this before continuing.      Previously in IPL, on-field umpire used to give Soft signal then the third umpire search for conclusive evidence. If conclusive evidence is not arrived, third umpire would go with Soft Signal. It was removed from IPL in 2021. Let’s see why that is a good decision based on an experiment.      University College London conducted a study in which the participants were asked to determine whether the tennis ball pitched was in or out. They were also given the default decision like “in” or “out”. If the default decision doesn’t match with the decision they have made, participants have to press a button to change the default decision. The difficult the process of deciding, the more they go with default decision. Likewise, I believe in IPL too, when the process of deciding i...

Decisions, I made in my life were not mine.

There are few things that you may wonder how did they do things like travelling to America or say, Ramanathapuram, to see the girl they barely know. Or other things like walking on your knees for a kilometer and not knowing why you did it in the first place. I thought those people were crazy but when I did those things, I blame it on the hormones. Maybe, my assumption was right. In addition to that, I found other reason too. It was not my decision to do such things, even though I think that was my decision. Here is the experiment to prove this case.      Benjamin Libet conducted an experiment by placing the electrodes on the head of the participants to measure their brain activity. Participants can move any part of the body as per their wish. For example, if the participant moved the index finger, they felt the urge to move the index finger before quarter of a second of actually lifting index finger. A second before you felt the urge to lift your index...

Don’t Judge people who don’t use condoms!

Image
Three months back, my friend was narrating a story about his friend who made his girlfriend pregnant. He was scolding the man as well as the woman for having unprotected sex and I was like what does he know. There is reason or at least an experiment behind my thought. This hot experiment was conducted on college men by Dan Ariely and his assistant Mike at MIT media lab. The experiment is of two phase. In the first phase, participants were given a computer and asked to imagine themselves as sexually aroused and answer the questions. Some of the questions were “Can you imagine being attracted to a 12-year-old girl / 60-year-old woman?”, “Would you slip a drug to a woman in order to have sex with you?”, “Would you always use condom?”. Answers were collected and participants were given $10 for participating. After few days, next phase of the experiment was conducted in which the participants were given a computer which was covered with saran wrap, you will know why😜. This time st...

Why shouldn't you trust your memory?

Image
If you have ever been in a relationship, I guess you would have faced the “You said that”, “No I didn’t say that” kind of situation. At the end who is right and who is wrong? Both of them are right in their own memory terms. The following will give you the clarity. Seven crew members of the space shuttle Challenger were killed in the disaster on the morning of January 28 1986. Two psychologist Ulric Neisser and Nicole Harsch used this opportunity to conduct the experiment. Next day morning, they gave questionnaire to the students asking questions like where they have been when they heard the news, who were near them, who told them about the disaster and at what time they have heard about the disaster. Two and half years later, they asked the same students the same question about the disaster. When they compared two answers there was a lot of difference between the answers. In the next round, they called the students for the interview and the produced the two...

Why do Sitcoms have laughing track at the background?

I love F.r.i.e.n.d.s. series so much and I always wanted to recommend the series to my friends but succeeded only in 2 cases. Many would start watching the first episode but have not got past 3 episodes. Do you know the common complaints I get? There is a laughing track even for awful jokes. There must be a reason for the laughing track, right? Let’s explore them. Imagine you go to a place where you have not been there before and also you don’t have any knowledge what the culture of the place is. What would you do? You just see around the people and learn from them. If majority of the people do something, then that must be the appropriate behaviour at that place. Most people won’t jump the line at an airport but more likely to do that in supermarket in a semi-urban place.  There are around 100,000 patients waiting for kidney from a donor in the US and 4,000 patients are added every month. Hence, there is a huge demand for kidney but supply side is very less. Considerin...

How to spend your salary and how to buy happiness with it?

I don’t know how many of us know exactly what to do with the salary we get. I don’t until I read “The richest man in Babylon”. You may think you have to save some amount from the salary, buy things that you always wanted and there are other expenses like rent, food, entertainment. The method that I am going to say may suit you or it may not. You can always modify according to your needs. No matter what your salary amount is, take 10% and let the money grow. You can invest in the field where you are sure of getting the positive results. Then the next 20%, you can use it for paying debt or EMI. I would suggest that before taking an EMI option, make sure that EMI does not exceed your 20% of your salary. If you are buying a house, then you can go for 30% of your salary (10% investment + 20% EMI) as EMI because I consider buying a house is kind of an investment. With the remaining 70% of your salary, you can live as you want. Suppose you have invested 10,000 whi...

How to stop worrying about the future (Purely impractical steps)?

We, human beings worry about future a lot. We spend an hour for every 8-hour thinking about the future. So how do we stop doing that? The reason we think so much about our future is our frontal lobe, a part of the brain that resides just above our eyes. If you take your frontal lobe out by surgery, you would feel more calm and you can even escape from depression. This partial destruction of frontal lobe became the standard surgery for anxiety and depression. The Nobel prize for medicine for given to Egas Moniz in 1949 as he discovered that removing frontal lobe would give us the calming experience. Removing the frontal lobe would help you to think only about the present and you will live in the present forever. If that was the case, I think at some point in our life we would go and do the surgery but it has its own demerits. You cannot possibly think about the future. If someone asks you what you would do tomorrow, you would become blank, literally blank. ...

Why skipping songs makes you less happy?

I have exactly 572 songs in my mobile storage and I put the songs in shuffle and keep on clicking next button until I have the song I hoped for. But while riding the bike, I won’t click the next button even though I can do that through my earphones. I suggest not to hear songs but don’t throw a statement like “You do that first”, “Do what you preach”. So, when will I enjoy the songs more? While relaxing in my bed where I have the option to choose whatever I want or while riding the bike. And the answer is while riding the bike. I have two experiments to prove my hypothesis. The first experiment is based on a photography course study. This study happened before the digital revolution. The photography teachers taught the students about how to take best photograph. At the end of the course, students were asked to take two best photographs. Among the two, one photograph has to be submitted as a reference for future students and other one can be kept by the students. The students ...
