How to stop worrying about the future (Purely impractical steps)?
We, human beings worry about future a lot. We spend an hour for every 8-hour thinking about the future. So how do we stop doing that?
The reason we think so much about our future is our frontal lobe, a part of the brain that resides just above our eyes. If you take your frontal lobe out by surgery, you would feel more calm and you can even escape from depression. This partial destruction of frontal lobe became the standard surgery for anxiety and depression. The Nobel prize for medicine for given to Egas Moniz in 1949 as he discovered that removing frontal lobe would give us the calming experience. Removing the frontal lobe would help you to think only about the present and you will live in the present forever.
If that was the case, I think at some point in our life we would go and do the surgery but it has its own demerits. You cannot possibly think about the future. If someone asks you what you would do tomorrow, you would become blank, literally blank. You cannot possibly plan for anything.
Is future that bad?
Imagine one of the bad things happens to you in the future such as having a work pressure. What image comes to your mind? The image might be you are screaming and the feeling that you want to quit the job. But does it ever occur to you that you would still be visiting the office (if the pandemic ever gets over), eating your favourite food occasionally, meeting a friend on weekends, chatting with your co-worker. I guess it’s a no. We missed out a lot of details which can greatly affect your happiness.
Ask the question “How much would you have changed 10 years from now?” to yourself. That is what Daniel Gilbert did ask to 18-year old people and he also asked “How much have you changed for the past 10 years?" to 28-year olds. Rationally, the answer should be quite identical but the 18-year old people underestimate that they would change very little. 28-year old people told they have changed a lot. So, when the future event that you are afraid of, happens, you would have changed a lot to tackle the situation.
So, my answer is the future is not going to be that bad.
