How to spend your salary and how to buy happiness with it?

     I don’t know how many of us know exactly what to do with the salary we get. I don’t until I read “The richest man in Babylon”. You may think you have to save some amount from the salary, buy things that you always wanted and there are other expenses like rent, food, entertainment. The method that I am going to say may suit you or it may not. You can always modify according to your needs.

No matter what your salary amount is, take 10% and let the money grow. You can invest in the field where you are sure of getting the positive results. Then the next 20%, you can use it for paying debt or EMI. I would suggest that before taking an EMI option, make sure that EMI does not exceed your 20% of your salary. If you are buying a house, then you can go for 30% of your salary (10% investment + 20% EMI) as EMI because I consider buying a house is kind of an investment. With the remaining 70% of your salary, you can live as you want.

Suppose you have invested 10,000 which is 10% of your salary in some investment that you are well aware of and it gives the return of 5,000. Even the 10% of the 5,000 should be invested. Therefore, it is not the 10% of the salary but 10% of the total cash inflow.

How to buy happiness with your salary?

Before buying the happiness with your salary, I think you need to be happy with your salary. Which option would you prefer from the following

a. You get the salary of Rs.40,000 and all your friends would earn Rs.60,000

b. You get the salary of Rs.30,000 and all your friends would earn Rs.20,000

    If you are like most people, you would have chosen the second option and it is nothing wrong about that. Never ever ask the salary of your friends. Again, there is nothing wrong in discussing the salary but your brain will automatically starts to compare which is going to make you awful. Yes, there is a possibility that you will search for ways to earn higher than what you are getting now. But there is a higher possibility that you feel awful.

    So how to buy happiness with what you are earning now? I have told that you can do whatever you want to with the 70% of your earnings. Recently, I had a desire of buying a bicycle. If I bought one, how many days would I be happy because I bought it. It is hardly a week. So, the money you spend for helping others is going to make you more happy than the material things that you always dreamt of buying. One more thing, at deathbed you are not going to remember the moment that you spent with the material things but it is more likely that you will remember the happy moment when you have been to new place.

    Long story short, helping others and exploring places are going to make you happy rather than material things that you always dreamt of.
