Why your mom was right?
Why your mom was right?
Psychological reason behind it.
You might relate this meme to your memories when your mom was bargaining when you asked for a toy. You might even felt embarrassment or even got angry on inside with your mom. But have you ever wondered why mom do that? I am pretty sure they might not know the reason or advantages behind it. Once you know the reason you could be able to implement it in your life while bargaining and negotiating and more surprisingly even to get good marks in your examinations and presentation.
To understand this mechanism, let’s go through the study that has been conducted by researchers. Some participants were shown tall tree and asked were given a questionnaire which contains only two questions.
a. Is the height of the tree more or less than 1200 feet?
b. Guess the height of the tree.
The average guess for the second answer was 844 feet. Now the researchers changed the first question to “Is the height of the tree more or less than 180 feet?”. Another round of experiment was conducted and now the average answer was 282 feet. So, when you see or hear a number and asked a question you tend to stick around the number even without knowing as it all happens in the unconscious brain. This is called anchoring effect.
Now let’s come to the point where we can use it in your negotiation. When you were given opportunity to negotiate the price, please go quote your price in the first chance you get before your opponent. If you don’t, then you will more likely to fall for the anchoring effect. You might have bargained with auto drivers (maybe not now as ola and uber has dominated). If he says that the ride would cost you some 200bucks, you will ask him for 180 or 170 even though the ride may actually cost you, say, 120. So how to overcome this? It’s very simple. Before asking for a price, ask yourself what it would actually cost you?
Now it’s time for getting good marks in presentation. Just put a high number at the end of the presentation so that the evaluator may get influenced by this anchoring effect. To be frank, I have not tried this but I am pretty sure this will work until and unless the teacher has read this article. I guess I don’t to explain why our mom was right because you are brilliant.
a. Will you rate this article 10 out of 10?
b. How much will you rate for this article?
